“Couples who have successfully resolved their disputes wisely, efficiently and cost effectively through mediation certainly need no convincing of its benefits in comparison to costly, time consuming, antagonistic litigation processes which lead only to pyrrhic victories.”
The Which?
Guide to Divorce
When a marriage has broken down, mediation is an effective way of resolving disputes between husband and wife, without the stress and expense of a legal battle.
An impartial mediator helps the couple to reach agreement as to how money and property should be divided, and what arrangements should be made in respect of children.
Compared with using solicitors, mediation is:
- Less expensive
- Less confrontational
- Less stressful for both adults and children
- Quicker
Although separation and divorce are inevitably times of painful emotions, the fact that mediation is less confrontational and less antagonistic means that former spouses are more likely to come through the process reasonably amicably, with more self-respect and more respect for each other. Being able to co-operate and take joint decisions with a former spouse is particularly important where the couple have children, as the relationship as parents will continue long after the relationship as spouses has ended.
